Neuroscientist Dr. Susan Hockfield believes we are on the cusp of a new convergence where discoveries in biology will come together with engineering to produce another array of almost inconceivable technologies’ Virus-built batteries. Protein-based water filters. Cancer-detecting nanoparticles. Mind-reading bionic limbs. Computer-engineered crops. The Age of Living Machines describes some of the most exciting new developments and the scientists and engineers who helped create them. Together they highlight the promise of the technology revolution of the twenty-first century to overcome some of the greatest humanitarian, medical, and environmental challenges of our time.
Dr. Hockfield served as the 16th president of Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2012, the first biologist and the first woman to serve in the position. She is currently Professor of Neuroscience in MIT’s Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and a member of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. Previously, she held the Marie Curie Visiting Professorship at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
