Our Favorite Films: My Cousin Vinny @ The Dreamland
Nov 19 @ 7:00 pm

When sweet Northern college kid Bill (Ralph Macchio) and his buddy Stan (Mitchell Whitfield) are picked up and thrown into the slammer in a hick Southern town, at first it looks like no big deal. Then they are informed that they are accused of murder. Penniless and without a single friend in the area, Bill decides to call his goofy cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci), who has somehow recently become a lawyer. Full of family feeling and bravado, Vinny, who has never tried a criminal case in his short life as a lawyer, rides south to defend his trusting relative. He’s an expert motormouth and street-level logician from the wilder reaches of metropolitan New York, complete with a thick accent and the attitude to go with it. Otherwise, he’s much less well qualified than your average public defender. When he arrives on the scene with his equally brassy girlfriend Lisa (Marisa Tomei), Bill is fairly sure he’s going to be sentenced to death. His buddy Stan is even less confident of his legal representative, if that’s possible, and the first thing Vinny has to do is to regain the consent of his clients to represent them. The local judge doesn’t seem any too sympathetic to Vinny’s verbal shenanigans either, and even the most optimistic supporter of the boys would begin to have doubts at this point — and Vinny’s no exception. With the insistent moral encouragement of his girlfriend, Vinny somehow accomplishes the impossible and wins grudging (if very irritated) respect from all concerned, for once studying as if his life depended on it.

Film for Thought: When Lambs Become Lions @ The Dreamland
Nov 20 @ 6:30 pm

In the Kenyan bush, a small-time ivory dealer fights to stay on top while forces mobilize to destroy his trade. When he turns to his younger cousin, a conflicted wildlife ranger who hasn’t been paid in months, they both see a possible lifeline. The plummeting elephant population in Africa has captured the attention of the world, and as the government cracks down, both poachers and rangers face their own existential crises–what is the value of elephant life relative to human life? And can we understand these hunters who will risk death, arrest, and the moral outrage of the world to provide for their families? Director Jon Kasbe followed the subjects of WHEN LAMBS BECOME LIONS over a three-year period, gaining an extraordinary level of access and trust on both sides of the ideological and ethical spectrum as he became part of their everyday lives. The result is a rare and visually arresting look through the perspectives and motives of the people at the epicenter of the conservation divide.

MET Live: Akhnaten @ The Dreamland
Nov 23 @ 12:55 pm

Director Phelim McDermott tackles another one of Philip Glass’s masterpieces, following the now-legendary Met staging of Satyagraha. Star countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo is the title pharaoh, the revolutionary ruler who transformed ancient Egypt, with the striking mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges in her Met debut as his wife, Nefertiti. To match the opera’s hypnotic, ritualistic music, McDermott has created an arresting vision that includes a virtuosic company of acrobats and jugglers. Karen Kamensek conducts in her Met debut.

Documentary Film with the Director: The Innocents of Florence @ Nantucket Atheneum
Nov 30 @ 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm
The film The Innocents of Florence, directed by David Battistella, tells the story of art restorers in Florence, Italy who begin in 2013 work on ‘Madonna of the Innocents,’ a 600 year old painting. Soon, they uncover the story of the city’s forgotten children, and the women who saved them.
It’s 1410 and Florence has a huge social problem – babies are being abandoned and dying at an alarming rate. City philanthropists organize and build a hospice for babies to assist young mothers to ease the problem and commission a painting to celebrate the opening of the building in 1446. In 2013, the same painting hangs in a museum in the original building and two women, an American and an Italian, are tasked with restoring it.
Jane Fortune and Elizabeth Wicks spearheaded the conservation of ‘Madonna of the Innocents’ when they became curious about the young Madonna depicted in the work. They were particularly intrigued by her facial expression. It seemed she was hiding a secret. The ‘hunch’ these women had that day in the museum led to what turned out to be the ‘greatest discovery of my career,’ says Wicks, who, with fellow conservator Nicoletta Fontani, spent close to 30 months preparing the work.
The film explores art, motherhood, Florentine humanism and how a progressive-thinking Renaissance society created one of the first Children’s hospitals in the world and Battistella tells this story through the restoration of a painting.
Battistella will be present to introduce the film and lead a Q&A after.

FREE TRIP TO EGYPT takes audiences on a remarkable journey, in which an unlikely group of travelers to the Middle East find themselves transformed by the power of human connection.

Tarek Mounib, a Canadian-Egyptian entrepreneur living in Switzerland, is troubled by a world that seems ever more divided and polarised. With the aim of trying to build mutual understanding, Tarek travels across the USA in order to find Americans who feel threatened by Islam and offer them a Free Trip to Egypt.
The initial reactions range from disbelief to hostility, but eventually, a diverse group is selected. These characters are a cross-section of contemporary America: including a teacher, a police officer, a Marine veteran, a single mom, a preacher and a beauty pageant queen
