Gardner Farm-Lost Farm Loop Hike
Sep 29 @ 8:00 am
Gardner Farm-Lost Farm Loop Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Combining elements of the Lost Farm and Gardner Farm hikes, this is a longer loop hike at approximately 2.5 miles, which helps you explore plant succession on globally threatened habitat known as sandplain grasslands. Although both former vegetable farms are well past the expression “gone to seed” and now dominated by the ubiquitous pitch pines, their groves and small forests are broken up by meadows of wildflowers, a maze of trails and the reed-lined shore of Hummock Pond to which there are several access points along the way. An active osprey nest is visible close to one of them.
Great views of the pond abound. The pine forest on Lost Farm is ideal shade in the summer with cool southwest winds blowing in over the pond. During the colder, windier months of the year, the pines are a welcome refuge to walk through.

What to Bring
Please wear whatever walking footwear works for you, and we strongly recommend bringing the following items on our hike: bug spray, water, a snack, and sunblock lotion. You may also wish to bring a camera, binoculars and compass to see more, plus a lightweight waterproof jacket if it looks like rain!

2nd Annual Nantucket Island 5K Run For Recovery @ Bartlett's Farm
Sep 29 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

The 2nd annual Nantucket Island 5K Run for Recovery (& 2 mile Walk) will take place at Bartlett’s Farm on Sunday, September 29th, 2019 at 9:00 am.

Last year’s run was a big success! We raised over $25,000 for Addictions Solutions of Nantucket with approximately 200 runners and walkers participating in the event. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the run, though, was the opportunity for families and friends to share stories, find hope, and realize they’re not alone.

The goals of the run are to come together as a community, decrease stigma, celebrate recovery, and raise awareness of treatment opportunities. Funds resulting from the run go to Addiction Solutions – Dr. Lepore and Aline Wommack’s Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program.

We have all been impacted in one way or another by addiction and mental health disorders – either within our community, our families, or perhaps even experiencing them ourselves. And often the good news about recovery can be often overlooked.

Intro to Beekeeping @ Sustainable Nantucket's Walter F. Ballinger Educational Community Farm

Sustainable Nantucket’s Beekeeper Mentoring program begins its second year with an introduction to beekeeping event at Sustainable Nantucket’s Walter F. Ballinger Educational Community Farm at 168 Hummock Pond Road.

Come out to the farm and learn about beekeeping, the costs, and sweet rewards! An equipment and bee colony cost sheet will be provided. Those who commit to beekeeping for the 2020 season will be assigned a beekeeping mentor from Nantucket’s bACKyard Beekeepers group and will need to keep at least one of their hives in the bee yard at Sustainable Nantucket’s farm.

We will not be opening hives, so no worries about that. We will take a look at the existing hives on the property at a safe distance, check out hive equipment and discuss all aspects of beekeeping. This event is free. Contact Peter Brace at coskataheaven@earthlink.net with any question.

Smooth Hummocks
Sep 29 @ 2:00 pm
Smooth Hummocks

About
Graded relatively flat by glacial meltwater running out over the coastal plain to the ocean 75 miles away when the landmass that would become Nantucket was nothing more than a wide, low ridge of sand, gravel and glacial erratics (boulders), Smooth Hummocks is Nantucket’s version of the Midwest’s prairies complete with rare wildflowers and grasses that thrive in sandy, nutrient-poor soil.

These so-called sandplain grasslands number less than 2,000 acres on the planet today and are protected as nesting habitat for the short-eared owl, studied by botanists, entomologists, used by island students for their ecology coursework and burned by the Nantucket Islands Land Bank for plant research and invasive species control. Smooth Hummocks is a fascinating island ecosystem with many things to teach us.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Smooth Hummocks trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

Terms of Endearment @ Bennett Hall

BY DAN GORDON, BASED ON THE NOVEL BY LARRY MCMURTRY AND ON THE SCREENPLAY BY JAMES L. BROOKS

Challenges in life and love test the resilience of a mother-daughter relationship in Dan Gordon’s adaptation of Terms of Endearment, based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Larry McMurtry and James L. Brooks’s screenplay of the Oscar-winning film. Described as a heartfelt comedy drama, Terms of Endearment explores the tumultuous relationship between Aurora, a devoted but opinionated mother, and her often pregnant and always headstrong daughter, Emma.

As Aurora struggles to impose order on her wayward daughter’s chaotic life, she finds her own taking an unexpectedly thrilling turn when she falls deeply in love for the first time in her life – with retired astronaut Garrett Breedlove. But Garrett it seems, is as big a cad as her daughter’s husband, and only when tragedy strikes the family is he revealed as a man with a heart of gold. This funny and touching story captures the delicate, sometimes fractured bonds between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, and lovers, both old and new.

“…this production reminds us that, even if we know how it ends, a good story will still be good whether on stage or screen. And if you have never seen the film you are in for a treat.” – Exeunt Magazine

Sankaty Bluff Hike

Sand, gravel and boulders laid down by the last glacier during the Wisconsinan Glacial Stage was not the first layer of foundation for Nantucket; an ocean bottom created during the Sangamonian Interglacial Stage and another pavement of glacial material during the Illinoian Glacial Stage are also underneath us. The only place to see all three distinct layers up close in an exposed cross-section view is Sankaty Bluff. On this hike, we’ll walk south down the beach from the Hoicks Hollow Road public way to where these layers are visible, learn about how they were formed and how they are part of Nantucket’s geological past.

Shawkemo Hills Hike
Sep 30 @ 2:00 pm
Shawkemo Hills Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Shawkemo Hills offers a hiking experience through a portion of the island dramatically shaped by the last glacier to cover most of North America. From a high spot on this hike, see and learn about the formation of Coatue, Great Point, the Haulover, Nantucket Harbor and inner harbor shores. And from a low spot along the trail, sometimes called a frost bottom because frost prevails only at these lowest of island elevations when it does nowhere else on Nantucket, discover how the glacier shaped the hills and dells — kames and kettles in geologic terms — of this north central part of the island. This is probably the shortest hike Nantucket Walkabout leads, clocking in at no more than one hour.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Shawkemo Hills trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

Following a sold-out run at the National Theatre, the NT and Neal Street Productions’ critically acclaimed The Lehman Trilogy is now performing in the West End until 31 August.

The story of a family and a company that changed the world, told in three parts on a single evening.

Sam Mendes directs Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles* who play the Lehman Brothers, their sons and grandsons.

On a cold September morning in 1844 a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside. Dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers and an American epic begins.

163 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, and triggers the largest financial crisis in history.

Sam Mendes (Skyfall, King Lear) returned to the National Theatre to direct Ben Power’s English version of Stefano Massini’s vast and poetic play, a hit across Europe.

* performing until 3 August. From 5 August, Dominik Tiefenthaler will play the role of Emanuel Lehman alongside Simon Russell Beale and Adam Godley

Lost Farm Sanctuary Hike
Oct 1 @ 8:00 am
Lost Farm Sanctuary Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Sitting on 90 acres at the north end of Hummock Pond on its east side, like Gardner Farm immediately south, Lost Farm’s former vegetable fields have given way to shrubs and native pitch pines. While this transition continues with all stages visible on the property, there is also an extensive pitch pine forest with some of the tallest pines on Nantucket. Trails meander through this forest with one tracking the eastern shore of the north end of Hummock Pond. Nantucket has few forests in the mainland sense, but pitch pines at Lost Farm constitute one of the best examples of forested land on the island. Bird calls echo among the pines as the wind blowing over Hummock Pond creates a whispering effect rushing through the trees’ needles. White-tailed deer frequent this property. There are mute swans, various duck species, great blue herons and ospreys on and around the pond where snapping and painted turtles poke their heads up from.

The area is within Nantucket’s oldest outwash plain of sandplain grasslands and contains pitch pine forests and a cattail-choked inlet over which a small walkway passes. This is one of the shorter hikes Nantucket Walkabout leads and is close to Cisco Beach and Cisco Brewery.
