Sankaty Bluff Hike

Sankaty Bluff Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Sand, gravel and boulders laid down by the last glacier during the Wisconsinan Glacial Stage was not the first layer of foundation for Nantucket; an ocean bottom created during the Sangamonian Interglacial Stage and another pavement of glacial material during the Illinoian Glacial Stage are also underneath us. The only place to see all three distinct layers up close in an exposed cross-section view is Sankaty Bluff. On this hike, we’ll walk south down the beach from the Hoicks Hollow Road public way to where these layers are visible, learn about how they were formed and how they are part of Nantucket’s geological past.

READY TO GO?

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Sankaty Bluff trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

Linda Loring Nature Foundation with Nantucket Walkabout
Sep 12 @ 12:45 pm
Linda Loring Nature Foundation with Nantucket Walkabout

Duration
2 Hours

About
Our eighth hike and the newest one starting with the 2016 season, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation’s publicly accessible property is on the south side of Eel Point Road on the west end of Nantucket’s north shore. It offers easy trails through sandplain grasslands, coastal shrublands and along the North Head of Long Pond in sight of an active osprey nest, hovering Northern harriers and views of Nantucket Sound from the highest points along the trail.

Nantucket Walkabout is very excited about its partnership with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation because hikers will be getting the dual benefit of guide Peter Brace’s natural world knowledge of Nantucket along with, when she’s available, expert property-specific information from Linda Loring’s director of research, Dr. Sarah Bois. A botanist, Sarah is great with children and will share with everyone her extensive plant, insect, bird and mammal knowledge pertaining to this property as well as ongoing research out on the land.

This is about a two-hour hike experience from pick up to drop off. Check the hike calendar to see when we are heading out to the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, but realize that this is a seasonal hike, which is on our hike calendar from spring through early fall. However, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation is open year-round to walkers who want to explore their property from sunrise to sunset. Please leave your dog(s), horse(s) and bike(s) at home, as none of these are allowed on the trails. Also, this is a great hike for student groups and schools.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. However, please book this hike no later than 5 p.m. the day before to guarantee that Dr. Bois will be available to hike with us. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the trail at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation and to book it. To arrange for private or student group hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

What to Bring
Please wear whatever walking footwear works for you, and we strongly recommend bringing the following items on our hike: bug spray, water, a snack, and sunblock lotion. NT Live: Small Island (Encore) @ The Dreamland

Andrea Levy’s epic, Orange Prize-winning novel bursts to new life on the Olivier stage. A company of 40 tells a story which journeys from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury.
Adapted for the stage by Helen Edmundson, Small Island follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK.

But when things go ridiculously wrong, the drone is destroyed. Desperate to replace it before Max’s dad (Will Forte, The Last Man on Earth) gets home, the boys skip school and set off on an odyssey of epically bad decisions involving some accidentally stolen drugs, frat-house paintball, and running from both the cops and terrifying teenage girls (Life of the Party’s Molly Gordon and Ocean’s Eight’s Midori Francis).

Terms of Endearment @ Bennett Hall

BY DAN GORDON, BASED ON THE NOVEL BY LARRY MCMURTRY AND ON THE SCREENPLAY BY JAMES L. BROOKS

Challenges in life and love test the resilience of a mother-daughter relationship in Dan Gordon’s adaptation of Terms of Endearment, based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Larry McMurtry and James L. Brooks’s screenplay of the Oscar-winning film. Described as a heartfelt comedy drama, Terms of Endearment explores the tumultuous relationship between Aurora, a devoted but opinionated mother, and her often pregnant and always headstrong daughter, Emma.

As Aurora struggles to impose order on her wayward daughter’s chaotic life, she finds her own taking an unexpectedly thrilling turn when she falls deeply in love for the first time in her life – with retired astronaut Garrett Breedlove. But Garrett it seems, is as big a cad as her daughter’s husband, and only when tragedy strikes the family is he revealed as a man with a heart of gold. This funny and touching story captures the delicate, sometimes fractured bonds between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, and lovers, both old and new.

“…this production reminds us that, even if we know how it ends, a good story will still be good whether on stage or screen. And if you have never seen the film you are in for a treat.” – Exeunt Magazine

Stump Swamp/Norwood Farm Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Two island ecosystems, a shrub swamp wetland and island moors dotted with kettle holes makes for fascinating hike through a section of the island molded by 500 feet of ice bearing down on it 21,000 years ago. A trail meanders along the edge of the Stump Swamp offering views of water and the birds that reside here. Connecting with Almanac Pond Road, the trail continues past Almanac Pond, a kettle hole itself, and over into the Nantucket Islands Land Bank’s portion of Norwood Farm, the result of a joint purchase of 207 acres with the Nantucket Conservation Foundation.

Norwood Farm is a unique mashup of much of the island’s terrain including forest, upland meadows, small ponds, a former cranberry bog and one of the island’s true flowing streams. This dual property hike can last 90-120 minutes depending on the group’s interest in seeing more or less of the area.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Stump Swamp/Norwood Farm trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

Smooth Hummocks
Sep 13 @ 2:00 pm
Smooth Hummocks

About
Graded relatively flat by glacial meltwater running out over the coastal plain to the ocean 75 miles away when the landmass that would become Nantucket was nothing more than a wide, low ridge of sand, gravel and glacial erratics (boulders), Smooth Hummocks is Nantucket’s version of the Midwest’s prairies complete with rare wildflowers and grasses that thrive in sandy, nutrient-poor soil.

These so-called sandplain grasslands number less than 2,000 acres on the planet today and are protected as nesting habitat for the short-eared owl, studied by botanists, entomologists, used by island students for their ecology coursework and burned by the Nantucket Islands Land Bank for plant research and invasive species control. Smooth Hummocks is a fascinating island ecosystem with many things to teach us.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Smooth Hummocks trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.
