Gardner Farm-Lost Farm Loop Hike
Sep 10 @ 8:00 am
Gardner Farm-Lost Farm Loop Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Combining elements of the Lost Farm and Gardner Farm hikes, this is a longer loop hike at approximately 2.5 miles, which helps you explore plant succession on globally threatened habitat known as sandplain grasslands. Although both former vegetable farms are well past the expression “gone to seed” and now dominated by the ubiquitous pitch pines, their groves and small forests are broken up by meadows of wildflowers, a maze of trails and the reed-lined shore of Hummock Pond to which there are several access points along the way. An active osprey nest is visible close to one of them.
Great views of the pond abound. The pine forest on Lost Farm is ideal shade in the summer with cool southwest winds blowing in over the pond. During the colder, windier months of the year, the pines are a welcome refuge to walk through.

What to Bring
Please wear whatever walking footwear works for you, and we strongly recommend bringing the following items on our hike: bug spray, water, a snack, and sunblock lotion. You may also wish to bring a camera, binoculars and compass to see more, plus a lightweight waterproof jacket if it looks like rain!

A strange turn of events pairs him on the road with Tyler (Shia LaBeouf), a small time outlaw on the run, who becomes Zak’s unlikely coach and ally. Together they wind through deltas, elude capture, drink whisky, find God, catch fish, and convince Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), a kind nursing home employee charged with Zak’s return, to join them on their journey.

Smooth Hummocks
Sep 10 @ 2:00 pm
Smooth Hummocks

About
Graded relatively flat by glacial meltwater running out over the coastal plain to the ocean 75 miles away when the landmass that would become Nantucket was nothing more than a wide, low ridge of sand, gravel and glacial erratics (boulders), Smooth Hummocks is Nantucket’s version of the Midwest’s prairies complete with rare wildflowers and grasses that thrive in sandy, nutrient-poor soil.

These so-called sandplain grasslands number less than 2,000 acres on the planet today and are protected as nesting habitat for the short-eared owl, studied by botanists, entomologists, used by island students for their ecology coursework and burned by the Nantucket Islands Land Bank for plant research and invasive species control. Smooth Hummocks is a fascinating island ecosystem with many things to teach us.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Smooth Hummocks trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

Movie: Good Boys @ The Dreamland

After being invited to his first kissing party, 12-year-old Max (Room’s Jacob Tremblay) is panicking because he doesn’t know how to kiss. Eager for some pointers, Max and his best friends Thor (Brady Noon, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) and Lucas (Keith L. Williams, Fox’s The Last Man On Earth) decide to use Max’s dad’s drone — which Max is forbidden to touch — to spy (they think) on a teenage couple making out next door. But when things go ridiculously wrong, the drone is destroyed. Desperate to replace it before Max’s dad (Will Forte, The Last Man on Earth) gets home, the boys skip school and set off on an odyssey of epically bad decisions involving some accidentally stolen drugs, frat-house paintball, and running from both the cops and terrifying teenage girls (Life of the Party’s Molly Gordon and Ocean’s Eight’s Midori Francis).

Margaret Atwood – Live in Cinemas @ The Dreamland

Margaret Atwood - Live in Cinemas @ The Dreamland

On Tuesday September 10, the wait will be over…THE TESTAMENTS, Margaret Atwood’s highly anticipated sequel to THE HANDMAID’S TALE, will be revealed. The momentous literary event will be celebrated with an exclusive live cinema broadcast, as Fane Productions present an evening with the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic and inventor.

‘I am delighted that the launch of The Testaments will take place not only in London on 10th September, but also by live-streaming to over 1000 cinemas around the world. I can’t be in all the places at once in my analogue body, but I look forward to being with so many readers via the big screen.’
Margaret Atwood

The publication of Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 and the current, Emmy Award-winning television series have created a cultural phenomenon, as handmaids have become a symbol of women’s rights and a protest against misogyny and oppression. Filmed live from the stage of the National Theatre in London, Atwood will be interviewed by broadcaster and author Samira Ahmed in a conversation spanning the length of Atwood’s remarkable career, her diverse range of works, and why she has returned to her seminal handmaid story, 34 years later.

‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.’
Margaret Atwood

With exclusive readings from the new book by special guests, this will be an unmissable and intimate event with Atwood, spotlighting her signature insight, humour and intellect.

Gardner Farm Hike
Sep 11 @ 2:00 pm
Gardner Farm Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Formerly a vegetable farm along the east of side of Hummock Pond, the Land Bank’s Gardner Farm property runs along Hummock Pond, a glacial meltwater river bed that once ran roughly 75 miles south out to the edge of the continental shelf. Now closed off to the ocean and filled with slightly brackish water — the Town of Nantucket opens the pond to the ocean twice a year — the pond is home to painted and snapping turtles, one to two pairs of nesting ospreys and scores of mute swans.

The area is within Nantucket’s oldest outwash plain of sandplain grasslands and contains pitch pine forests and a cattail-choked inlet over which a small walkway passes. This is one of the shorter hikes Nantucket Walkabout leads and is close to Cisco Beach and Cisco Brewery.

-This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Gardner Farm trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.
