Stenciled and Painted Floorcloth with Karen Graves @ 1800 House
Aug 15 @ 9:00 am – Aug 17 @ 1:00 pm
Stenciled and Painted Floorcloth with Karen Graves @ 1800 House

Floorcloths are actually canvas area rugs. These rugs were popular in 18th century England and could be found in many wealthy period homes. There were many designs including wood graining, tiles, and marbling. Eventually, American colonists began to create these durable and functional floor covers. Once again, floorcloths are popular and fun to create.

We will be creating a floorcloth measuring three feet by five feet. The canvas will be double primed on the top side and single primed on the bottom. A base coat of off white will also be applied to the top side so your canvas will be ready to work on immediately. Our sample floorcloth is a checkered design that incorporates a compass rose. You may choose to paint another design and I will have many stencils that may be used. All materials will be supplied including tape, brushes, sponges, paints and final finish.

Sankaty Bluff Hike

Sankaty Bluff Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Sand, gravel and boulders laid down by the last glacier during the Wisconsinan Glacial Stage was not the first layer of foundation for Nantucket; an ocean bottom created during the Sangamonian Interglacial Stage and another pavement of glacial material during the Illinoian Glacial Stage are also underneath us. The only place to see all three distinct layers up close in an exposed cross-section view is Sankaty Bluff. On this hike, we’ll walk south down the beach from the Hoicks Hollow Road public way to where these layers are visible, learn about how they were formed and how they are part of Nantucket’s geological past.

READY TO GO?

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Sankaty Bluff trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

The Life Studio as Painted & Perceptual Space with Stuart Shils @ AAN's Visual Arts Center

For experienced painters.
This class offers a controlled and carefully orchestrated setting for analytically exploring critical pictorial concerns ranging far beyond “how to” paint the figure. Students will be encouraged to focus on pictorial structure and composition, while paying attention to both the setup of the room and the painting. Working with a model as only part of a much larger organization of form. color and design. We will dig into the complex relationship of how we see nature and how we compose on the page. Exploration and fun will also be key elements. Please note this class begins at 8:30am on the first day of class.
Stuart will also offer a FREE talk on Tuesday, August 14 at 6pm.
*AAN is pleased to be able to offer partial scholarships to our adult students. Please contact Bethany Oliver prior to registering*

Smooth Hummocks
Aug 17 @ 2:00 pm
Smooth Hummocks

About
Graded relatively flat by glacial meltwater running out over the coastal plain to the ocean 75 miles away when the landmass that would become Nantucket was nothing more than a wide, low ridge of sand, gravel and glacial erratics (boulders), Smooth Hummocks is Nantucket’s version of the Midwest’s prairies complete with rare wildflowers and grasses that thrive in sandy, nutrient-poor soil.

These so-called sandplain grasslands number less than 2,000 acres on the planet today and are protected as nesting habitat for the short-eared owl, studied by botanists, entomologists, used by island students for their ecology coursework and burned by the Nantucket Islands Land Bank for plant research and invasive species control. Smooth Hummocks is a fascinating island ecosystem with many things to teach us.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Smooth Hummocks trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.
