Shawkemo Hills Hike
Jul 7 @ 8:00 am
Shawkemo Hills Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Shawkemo Hills offers a hiking experience through a portion of the island dramatically shaped by the last glacier to cover most of North America. From a high spot on this hike, see and learn about the formation of Coatue, Great Point, the Haulover, Nantucket Harbor and inner harbor shores. And from a low spot along the trail, sometimes called a frost bottom because frost prevails only at these lowest of island elevations when it does nowhere else on Nantucket, discover how the glacier shaped the hills and dells — kames and kettles in geologic terms — of this north central part of the island. This is probably the shortest hike Nantucket Walkabout leads, clocking in at no more than one hour.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Shawkemo Hills trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

Please wear whatever walking footwear works for you, and we strongly recommend bringing the following items on our hike: bug spray, water, a snack, and sunblock lotion. You may also wish to bring a camera, binoculars and compass to see more, plus a lightweight waterproof jacket if it looks like rain!

So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries.

Sankaty Bluff Hike
Jul 7 @ 2:00 pm
Sankaty Bluff Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Sand, gravel and boulders laid down by the last glacier during the Wisconsinan Glacial Stage was not the first layer of foundation for Nantucket; an ocean bottom created during the Sangamonian Interglacial Stage and another pavement of glacial material during the Illinoian Glacial Stage are also underneath us. The only place to see all three distinct layers up close in an exposed cross-section view is Sankaty Bluff. On this hike, we’ll walk south down the beach from the Hoicks Hollow Road public way to where these layers are visible, learn about how they were formed and how they are part of Nantucket’s geological past.

Grease by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs @ Bennett Hall

Grease by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs @ Bennett Hall

It’s 1959, and Rydell High School’s senior class is in rare form. The too-cool-for-school “Burger Palace Boys” are stealing hubcaps and acting tough and their gum-snapping, chain-smoking “Pink Ladies” are looking hot in bobby socks and pedal pushers. The 1950s high school dream is about to explode in this rollicking musical that is both an homage to the idealism of the fifties and a satire of high schoolers’ age-old desire to be provocative and rebellious.

At the heart of the story is the romance between hot- rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the sweet new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski. They had a secret romance over the summer, but now back in the context of school, peer pressure and cliques make their love a bit more complicated. Can Danny maintain his cool dude status and still make demure Sandy his girl? The whole gang sings and dances around Danny and Sandy’s romance, through such hit songs as “Greased Lightnin’,” “We Go Together,” and “Mooning,” recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. Starting off with an eight-year Broadway run, Grease is among the world’s most popular musicals and has a cult-like following, especially among teens!

Author Talk & Screening: William McKeever, ‘Emperors of the Deep: Sharks” @ Nantucket Atheneum
Jul 7 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Author Talk & Screening: William McKeever, 'Emperors of the Deep: Sharks'' @ Nantucket Atheneum
Filmmaker, author and conservationist William McKeever is on a mission to change everyone’s views of sharks, mysterious creatures of the deep. His new book takes readers on a pulse-pounding journey around the world and deep under the water’s surface”from the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle to the coral reefs of the tropical Central Pacific”to dispel the narrative about sharks (from Jaws to ‘Shark Week,)’ which claims they’re terrifying underwater predators.
In addition, McKeever will screen a 20 minute excerpt from his companion film of the same name.
McKeever says, ‘Sharks are unequivocally essential to maintaining a balanced ecosystem. When these important apex predators are removed from the ocean, the effect on reefs, seagrass and all the marine ecosystems is catastrophic for generations to come.’
McKeever, founder Safe The Seas nonprofit, witnessed a shark tournament and was so incensed that he left his job in finance to donate all of his time to ocean conservation and saving sharks. He embarked on a two-year journey around the world to write the book and produce the film because every year the plight of the shark is getting worse.
Book signing to follow.

Movie: The Shining @ The Dreamland

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” — or, rather, a homicidal boy in Stanley Kubrick’s eerie 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel. With wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and psychic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) in tow, frustrated writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the winter caretaker at the opulently ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in peace. Before the Overlook is vacated for the Torrances, the manager (Barry Nelson) informs Jack that a previous caretaker went crazy and slaughtered his family; Jack thinks it’s no problem, but Danny’s “shining” hints otherwise. Settling into their routine, Danny cruises through the empty corridors on his Big Wheel and plays in the topiary maze with Wendy, while Jack sets up shop in a cavernous lounge with strict orders not to be disturbed. Danny’s alter ego, “Tony,” however, starts warning of “redrum” as Danny is plagued by more blood-soaked visions of the past, and a blocked Jack starts visiting the hotel bar for a few visions of his own. Frightened by her husband’s behavior and Danny’s visit to the forbidding Room 237, Wendy soon discovers what Jack has really been doing in his study all day, and what the hotel has done to Jack.

Polpis Harbor Hike
Jul 8 @ 8:00 am
Polpis Harbor Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Although Polpis Harbor is part of Nantucket Harbor, with its own narrow channel leading into it and two distinct coves or, lobes, this former kettle hole definitely feels like its own small harbor with a mooring field in its east lobe and a few boats in its west cove. Native Americans living around it spelled Polpis “Podpis”, which in their tongue meant “divided or branched harbor.”

The Polpis area was first called “Spotso Country” for an Indian chief named Spotso who lived nearby for about 40 years. In the 1600s, farms sprouted all around the harbor, along with fulling mills to clean and prepare wool. Some industrious islanders built sea salt evaporator operations and also excavated peat from the saltmarsh to burn in stoves for heat.

Festooned with salt marshes populated with nesting and fishing shorebirds, Polpis Harbor also has beautiful meadows overlooking the east cove with trails looping around this property and through the remains of a holly tree farm’s former inventory. Part two of this hike on the way back to town is a closer look at Nantucket Harbor from an inner harbor coastal bank overlooking the water with Coatue to the north, town to west and Pocomo Point to the east.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Polpis Harbor/Quaise and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.
