Smooth Hummocks
Oct 3 @ 8:00 am
Smooth Hummocks

About
Graded relatively flat by glacial meltwater running out over the coastal plain to the ocean 75 miles away when the landmass that would become Nantucket was nothing more than a wide, low ridge of sand, gravel and glacial erratics (boulders), Smooth Hummocks is Nantucket’s version of the Midwest’s prairies complete with rare wildflowers and grasses that thrive in sandy, nutrient-poor soil.

These so-called sandplain grasslands number less than 2,000 acres on the planet today and are protected as nesting habitat for the short-eared owl, studied by botanists, entomologists, used by island students for their ecology coursework and burned by the Nantucket Islands Land Bank for plant research and invasive species control. Smooth Hummocks is a fascinating island ecosystem with many things to teach us.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Smooth Hummocks trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

Linda Loring Nature Foundation with Nantucket Walkabout
Oct 3 @ 12:45 pm
Linda Loring Nature Foundation with Nantucket Walkabout

Duration
2 Hours

About
Our eighth hike and the newest one starting with the 2016 season, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation’s publicly accessible property is on the south side of Eel Point Road on the west end of Nantucket’s north shore. It offers easy trails through sandplain grasslands, coastal shrublands and along the North Head of Long Pond in sight of an active osprey nest, hovering Northern harriers and views of Nantucket Sound from the highest points along the trail.

Nantucket Walkabout is very excited about its partnership with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation because hikers will be getting the dual benefit of guide Peter Brace’s natural world knowledge of Nantucket along with, when she’s available, expert property-specific information from Linda Loring’s director of research, Dr. Sarah Bois. A botanist, Sarah is great with children and will share with everyone her extensive plant, insect, bird and mammal knowledge pertaining to this property as well as ongoing research out on the land.

This is about a two-hour hike experience from pick up to drop off. Check the hike calendar to see when we are heading out to the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, but realize that this is a seasonal hike, which is on our hike calendar from spring through early fall. However, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation is open year-round to walkers who want to explore their property from sunrise to sunset. Please leave your dog(s), horse(s) and bike(s) at home, as none of these are allowed on the trails. Also, this is a great hike for student groups and schools.

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. However, please book this hike no later than 5 p.m. the day before to guarantee that Dr. Bois will be available to hike with us. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the trail at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation and to book it. To arrange for private or student group hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.

Film for Thought: Cold Case Hammarskjold @ The Dreamland
Oct 3 @ 2:00 pm
Film for Thought: Cold Case Hammarskjold @ The Dreamland

In 1961, United Nations secretary-general Dag Hammarskjöld’s plane mysteriously crashed, killing Hammarskjöld and most of the crew. With the case still unsolved 50-plus years later, Danish journalist, filmmaker, and provocateur Mads Brügger (The Red Chapel, The Ambassador) leads us down an investigative rabbit hole to unearth the truth. Scores of false starts, dead ends, and elusive interviews later, Brügger and his sidekick, Swedish Göran Björkdahl, begin to sniff out something more monumental than anything they’d initially imagined. In his signature agitprop style, Brügger becomes both filmmaker and subject, challenging the very nature of truth by “performing” the role of truth seeker. As Brügger uncovers a critical secret that could send shockwaves around the world, we realize that sometimes absurdity and irony are the emboldening ingredients needed to confront what’s truly sinister.

BY DAN GORDON, BASED ON THE NOVEL BY LARRY MCMURTRY AND ON THE SCREENPLAY BY JAMES L. BROOKS

Challenges in life and love test the resilience of a mother-daughter relationship in Dan Gordon’s adaptation of Terms of Endearment, based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Larry McMurtry and James L. Brooks’s screenplay of the Oscar-winning film. Described as a heartfelt comedy drama, Terms of Endearment explores the tumultuous relationship between Aurora, a devoted but opinionated mother, and her often pregnant and always headstrong daughter, Emma.

As Aurora struggles to impose order on her wayward daughter’s chaotic life, she finds her own taking an unexpectedly thrilling turn when she falls deeply in love for the first time in her life – with retired astronaut Garrett Breedlove. But Garrett it seems, is as big a cad as her daughter’s husband, and only when tragedy strikes the family is he revealed as a man with a heart of gold. This funny and touching story captures the delicate, sometimes fractured bonds between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, and lovers, both old and new.

“…this production reminds us that, even if we know how it ends, a good story will still be good whether on stage or screen. And if you have never seen the film you are in for a treat.” – Exeunt Magazine

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fracturedsociety. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Gardner Farm-Lost Farm Loop Hike
Oct 4 @ 8:00 am
Gardner Farm-Lost Farm Loop Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Combining elements of the Lost Farm and Gardner Farm hikes, this is a longer loop hike at approximately 2.5 miles, which helps you explore plant succession on globally threatened habitat known as sandplain grasslands. Although both former vegetable farms are well past the expression “gone to seed” and now dominated by the ubiquitous pitch pines, their groves and small forests are broken up by meadows of wildflowers, a maze of trails and the reed-lined shore of Hummock Pond to which there are several access points along the way. An active osprey nest is visible close to one of them.
Great views of the pond abound. The pine forest on Lost Farm is ideal shade in the summer with cool southwest winds blowing in over the pond. During the colder, windier months of the year, the pines are a welcome refuge to walk through.

What to Bring
Please wear whatever walking footwear works for you, and we strongly recommend bringing the following items on our hike: bug spray, water, a snack, and sunblock lotion. Sankaty Bluff Hike

Duration
2 Hours

About
Sand, gravel and boulders laid down by the last glacier during the Wisconsinan Glacial Stage was not the first layer of foundation for Nantucket; an ocean bottom created during the Sangamonian Interglacial Stage and another pavement of glacial material during the Illinoian Glacial Stage are also underneath us. The only place to see all three distinct layers up close in an exposed cross-section view is Sankaty Bluff. On this hike, we’ll walk south down the beach from the Hoicks Hollow Road public way to where these layers are visible, learn about how they were formed and how they are part of Nantucket’s geological past.

READY TO GO?

This hike costs $40 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Check the Hike Calendar to see when we are hiking the Sankaty Bluff trail and to book it. To arrange for a private hike on this route, call or email us for our rates and to discuss your hiking needs.
