Hands on History
Join us this summer for history-themed crafts in the Whaling Museum Discovery Center.
Learn about the history of Nantucket through guided craft activities perfect for ages 5–12.
Rainy day and want to avoid the crowds? Stop in to take a craft kit home with you.
Crafts will be offered once every two weeks:
(Offered July 5–9 and 19–23 / August 2–6 and 16–20)
Monday: Make pinwheels and whirligigs, all things that spin.
Tuesday: Make train conductor hats and locomotives, inspired by the Nantucket Railroad.
Wednesday: Make a model of a lighthouse.
Thursday: Make a souvenir Sailors Valentine and shell chimes.
Friday: Make signal flags and semaphore flags and learn how to send a message to a passing vessel!
(Offered July 12–16 and 26–30 / August 9–13 and 23–27)
Monday: Make a handwoven coaster with this simple weaving activity.
Tuesday: Make your own piece of scrimshaw using PVC pipe.
Wednesday: Make a button and celebrate the extraordinary women of Nantucket.
Thursday: Make a kite to fly on your next beach adventure.
Friday: Make a colorful, 3D fish or whale.
